Determining Eligibility for Hard of Hearing Consumers
Okay. I’ve been talking to a lot of people about the ALD Training Program recently and this topic came up twice in a week. The sentiment was that VR as an agency was not doing all it could to prepare counselors in dealing with the largest, and largest growing, disability group in America.
Some counselors felt somewhat overwhelmed or not confident in their ability to serve this population well. Other’s feared that when a counselor is untrained or inexperienced with hearing loss issues, they determined these individuals to be ineligible for services.
These comments came from across the country - From counselors in the trenches - From passionate experienced counselors - and from counselors who did not feel confident in their ability to provide services.
“Not serving an entire population because of our limitations as an agency is not acceptable.”
“If we aren’t trained to know how to adequately assess a situation or what services are available and clients are deemed ineligible for services because of our lack of training, it is a blatant misuse of federal and state money and that is unethical. We deal with the largest disability group in America.”
“We are basically discriminating against people with hearing loss.”
I explained how the ALD Training Program specifically addresses these concerns. Understanding hearing loss and hearing loss issues is addressed in Module 1. The Results Are In - The ALD Class is a Success!
Wow - How time does fly. The inaugural class of the ALD Technical Training Program completed just a few short weeks ago and based on the evaluations, it was an overall success. I thought you’d like to see the comments. You can simply click here to read them. Here’s a quick sample:
“This program was very informative and very much user friendly. I like that I am able to use and reference the information to help me do my job with much more confidence. I have saved many of the resource lists and links and find it very helpful.
“Videos were excellent (when operational on my computer). Very informative and concise. Being able to see the products, see the concepts/charts made learning fun and enjoyable.”
I broke the cardinal rule of blogging, I didn’t keep you up to date as the training class progressed. I’ll be doing a better job as the next class begins as I share some of the new resources available to class participants. Read more »
